The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (India)
This act establishes the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and regulates food safety and standards in India. FSSAI registration is mandated under this act for businesses involved in activities like manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and sale of food items.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body functioning under the ministry of health and family welfare and is an organisation that regulates food safety in India. The main FSSAI role is to regulate the manufacture, sale, and import of food articles and establish particular standards to ensure food safety throughout India. It is an autonomous statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. The main purpose of FSSAI is to set and enforce food quality standards across all the food business sectors in India. It is mandatory for food business operators to obtain an FSSAI license to conduct their operations without any hindrance.
Based on the annual turnover and the number of locations of the food business, three types of food licenses are provided.
If the food business owner generates an annual turnover that is less than ₹12 lakhs, they shall get registered through basic registration.
If the food business has an annual turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores, then the food business operator should apply for a state license.
If the annual revenue of the food business is above ₹20 crore, then the food business owner should apply for a central license using Form B. This license is also required for food businesses with branches across India.
As per the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, under Sections 31(1) and 31(2), FSSAI registration is mandatory for every food business operator in the country. Food manufacturers and food business operators should be licensed or registered under the food safety and standards authority of India. The registration process is also mandatory for pretty food manufacturers, Petty, retailers, itinerant vendors, temporary stall holders, and small-scale cottage industries with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs. Businesses with an annual income of more than ₹12 lakhs are required to apply for an FSSAI license.
An FSSAI license is valid for a period of one to five years and can be renewed before it expires. Any person or organisation that has an Food license is eligible to apply for a renewal of their license by submitting an application no later than 30 days before their license expires.The renewal process is similar to the application process and requires the same documents. Any FSSAI renewal application submitted after the expiration date is subject to a ₹100 per day late fee. The Food Business Operator must stop all operations at the location if the food license has expired.
If you want to change your business address or any other details on your license, you will need to apply for a new license. You can do this by filling out the online application form and providing the required documents.
